Why is there controversy over a free cell phone directory?

Due to the overwhelming popularity of cell phones in the communication industry today, you can find a cell phone directory in several places on the Internet. This has to some extent caused some controversy due to the privacy laws that most cellular phone companies have with their customers. There are many people that have their land line phones unlisted due to the fact that they do not want anyone to have their phone number that they did not give it to and they feel the same way when it comes to their cell phones. There are many people that want their cell phone numbers unlisted as well.  
 

But then again there are a lot of times when you may need to get a hold of someone such as your child's friend or their parents, a co-worker, or a neighbor and the only way to get a hold of them is through their cell phone. This is where a cell phone directory would come in handy. They also come in handy when you have installed all of your phone numbers into your cell phone and then something unexpected happens and the phone gets lost. If that is the only place where you have your numbers, then they are lost too.

There is also a reverse cell phone directory that is available for you to use. This comes in handy when you get a call on your cell phone and that annoying "unavailable number" pops up on your screen. The directory will allow you to enter in the cell phone number that was displayed on your phone and it will find the name that is associated with that cell phone. Sometimes this does not work quite right and only the service provider is named along with general information but not who the caller was.´ 

Regardless of whether you appose the cell phone directory or you are against it, there really is no stopping it due to the Internet and all of the information that you can find out about people no matter how well you try to keep it private. Just as long as you inform your cellular company what your preferences are about this directory, you can either keep your phone private or give permission to have it in a directory. Technology will continue to advance to cellular phones becoming obsolete anyway, but for now, just keep what you want private and take advantage of what is not.
